Is there a 10 response limit on SurveyMonkey? ›

Survey restrictions while on the free plan

There's a limit of 10 questions per survey, which includes text and images. If you have live surveys with more than 10 questions, we don't delete any questions, but you may run into editing restrictions. You can only copy surveys with 10 questions or less.

Let's say you need to collect basic information before digging deeper – that's almost impossible with only 10 questions. SurveyMonkey also places a limit on the number of responses you can get, capping you at 100.

SurveyMonkey's free plan caps the number of responses you can view at 40.

So, what is a good survey response rate? Factors that impact this include, how engaged your customers are with your brand, and whether you're delivering surveys in a way that's easy for them. Nevertheless, a good survey response rate ranges between 5% and 30%. An excellent response rate is 50% or higher.

A survey response rate of 50% or higher should be considered excellent in most circumstances. A high response rate is likely driven by high levels of motivation to complete the survey, or a strong personal relationship between business and customer. Survey response rates in the 5% to 30% range are far more typical.

As a very rough rule of thumb, 200 responses will provide fairly good survey accuracy under most assumptions and parameters of a survey project. 100 responses are probably needed even for marginally acceptable accuracy.

All free users of the Google Forms add-on can send up to 20 form responses per day. Please note that this sending limit is based on “email recipients per day” rather than on form responses.

On question types that allow multiple answer choices, rows, or textboxes, you can set a range or a limit on how many the respondent must answer. To do this, you need to make the question required to answer.

What is a reasonable sample size for a survey? ›

The same source states that the maximum number of respondents should be 10% of your population, but it should not exceed 1000. For instance, if you have a population of 250,000, 10% would be 2,500. Since this is higher than 1,000, a sample size of 1,000 should be enough to get you statistically significant results.

A sample size of 30 often increases the confidence interval of your population data set enough to warrant assertions against your findings.4 The higher your sample size, the more likely the sample will be representative of your population set.

Don't forget about data quality

Shorter surveys have higher completion rates, which means they have overall better data quality. If you're sending a survey to your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, or customers, you want to get as many responses as possible. Keeping your survey short helps you do exactly that.

In general, in-person interviews have the highest response rates, followed by telephone surveys, and then mail and Internet surveys.

The answer lies somewhere in between. It's often a good idea (for qualitative research methods like interviews and usability tests) to start with 5 participants and then scale up by a further 5 based on how complicated the subject matter is.

There is no hard and fast answer. However, as a general rule, the survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete; less than five minutes is more than twice as good. Typically, this means about five to 10 questions. Ask fewer questions if they are particularly involved or are free-response questions.

200,000 characters is the maximum allowed for total responses per form. For example, if a form contains five text questions, and the respondent has already reached the 200,000- character limit by the fourth question, they won't be able to provide a response for the fifth question.

Academia tells us that 30 seems to be an ideal sample size for the most comprehensive view of an issue, but studies with as few as 10 participants can yield fruitful and applicable results (recruiting excellence is even more important here!).

For populations under 1,000, a minimum ratio of 30 percent (300 individuals) is advisable to ensure representativeness of the sample. For larger populations, such as a population of 10,000, a comparatively small minimum ratio of 10 percent (1,000) of individuals is required to ensure representativeness of the sample.

How long should a survey be? It's best to keep surveys under 12 minutes – though 10 minutes is even better. Often, the longer the survey, the higher the dropout rate. Kantar has found that a survey that takes over 25 minutes loses more than three times as many respondents as one that is under five minutes.

15-minute survey: 30 to 45 questions

For most surveys, 20 minutes is about the maximum you can go before respondent attention lags and data quality deteriorates.

Because surveys collect data at a single point in time, it is difficult to measure changes in the population unless two or more surveys are done at different points in time. Such repetition is often expensive and time-consuming, making frequent periodic surveys impractical.

A good survey response rate is one that is above average and, based on some industry data, that would be anything above 25% and subject to having enough total responses.
